Full Bloom

The score is how deep into the year you got.

Balatro is the game where a poker hand is not worth what poker says it is worth. You play five cards, the game works out what they are, and then everything you have bought since the run started has its say — a card that pays extra, a charm that multiplies whatever the last one added — and a pair of fours ends up beating a target that a straight flush could not have touched an hour ago. It came out in 2024 and it is the same idea every deckbuilder is now borrowing.

This is that shape, one screen and one sitting: a fifty-two card deck, eight cards in hand, four hands to beat a target, and a market between blooms where the run is actually built. It is an homage and it says so. Nothing is lifted — every charm, every blight and every noise here was written from scratch — and it is not connected to LocalThunk or Playstack in any way.

  • Waxed +34 pollen when it scores
  • Barbed +4 Mult when it scores
  • Gilded +3 honey when it scores
  • Wild counts as every suit at once
  • Brittle ×2 Mult, and one in four it breaks

A hand is pollen times mult#

Everything on this cabinet is those two numbers. The hand you played sets both, the cards that scored add pollen, and everything else adds to one side or multiplies the other.

  • Play up to five cards. The game names the best hand in them and only the cards that made it score — a pair scores two cards, a flush scores five. The rest were company.
  • The cards pay pollen. A number card pays its number, a court card pays 10, an Ace pays 11.
  • Then the charms have their say, left to right along the top. That order is a real decision — a charm that multiplies is worth far more with the flat ones sitting to its left — so click one charm and then another to swap them.
  • Four hands, three discards. A discard is not a wasted turn, it is the turn where you go and get the flush.

The scoring is deliberately slow and serial — a card at a time, a charm at a time, each one popping the number it is responsible for — because the pleasure is not the total, it is watching where the total came from. Click during it and the rest lands at once.

The year#

Three blooms to a season, and the third one has something wrong with it.

Small Bloom

The season's target as written. Clearing it pays 3 honey.

Big Bloom

Half again as much. Pays 4.

Blight

Twice as much, and a rule on top of it — a suit that scores nothing, a hand you may only play once, a hand dealt face down. The rule is named before you choose to walk into it. Pays 5.

There is no ending. Season 9 is season 8 with the target multiplied again, and the run ends when a bloom is not met. Clearing a bloom in season N scores N × 200, and a blight another N × 500 — so the seasons pile up on themselves and a run is worth exactly how deep into the year it got.

A small or a big bloom can also be skipped for a favour: honey, a free charm, a hand levelled, an easier target next time. You give up what it would have paid to get the thing that might have been worth more.

The market#

Between blooms: two things on the shelf, two packs, and a reroll that gets more expensive every time.

  • Charms are the run. Five slots, and one can be sold to make room — a charm that pays for spades is worth nothing once you have turned the deck red.
  • Seeds level a hand type for good. Levelling the pair you keep playing is usually better than levelling the flush you keep hoping for.
  • Tinctures reach into the deck itself: stamp a card, change its suit, copy it, burn it, or ripen it a rank. This is how a fifty-two card deck stops being a fifty-two card deck.
  • Honey earns interest at every cash-out — 1 for every 5 held, up to 5 — so the honey you did not spend is quietly a charm of its own.

Five things can be stamped on a card, and the key for them is under the screen. Waxed and Barbed are pollen and mult; Gilded pays honey when it scores; Wild counts as every suit at once, which is how a flush stops depending on the draw; and Brittle doubles the mult and breaks one time in four, leaving the deck for good.

Posting a run#

Sign in with Discord and the run posts itself the moment a bloom goes unmet; play as a guest and it is kept as a personal best on this device instead. The board ranks on score and shows the season you reached beside it, and the final screen tells you the biggest single hand of the run — which is the number people actually quote at each other. The arcade page has the longer version of how the boards work, and the other cabinets.
